How many ABC stores are in NC? ›

The 168 local ABC boards operate 432 stores statewide and employ over 2,870 people.

The Commission provides uniform control over the sale, purchase, transportation, manufacture, consumption and possession of all alcoholic beverages in the state. Nationally, North Carolina is one of 17 control states/jurisdictions and is a member of the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association.

In addition to spirituous liquor, ABC stores may sell fortified wine and wine products, but may not sell any alcoholic beverage which has not been approved by the Commission for sale in this State.

Individuals cannot open liquor stores in North Carolina. Towns and counties have elections for an ABC store. The town/county appointing authority then appoints board members whose responsibility it is to establish the ABC store.

What time can I buy alcohol in NC? Alcohol products can only be sold or served Monday through Saturday from 7-2 a.m. On Sundays, alcohol can only be sold, served and consumed after 10 a.m. This time used to be noon but was changed by the 2017 "Brunch Bill."

What is the brown bagging law in NC? ›

A brown-bagging permit authorizes each individual patron of an establishment, with the permission of the permittee, to bring up to eight liters of fortified wine or spirituous liquor, or eight liters of the two combined, onto the premises and to consume those alcoholic beverages on the premises.

What times can you buy liquor, wine, or beer in North Carolina? The law states that the sale of alcohol can take place between Monday and Saturday 7 AM – 2 AM. On Sunday, certain types of alcohol can be purchased after 12 PM.

Depending on the type of permit you need, the ABC liquor license cost in North Carolina ranges from $100 to $1,000. Each alcohol-providing establishment is different, so be sure you have a thorough understanding of your business and know if it may require more than one license to be run successfully and legally.

That's because, unlike beer and wine, liquor can't be sold in regular grocery stores in North Carolina. Instead, the sale of liquor is controlled by the state, through the state government's Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Commission.

Currently, ABC stores are prohibited from being open and selling alcohol on Sundays. A new change proposed would allow local ABC boards to remove this ban. Liquor stores are also currently not allowed to be open on New Year's Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day.
