'Breakin' All the Rules' A friend recently suggested that the title "Breakin' All the Rules" is so generic it could refer to 90 percent of the movies in theaters. Julianne and Pierce, Jesus Christ, Denzel they're all breaking or, rather, breakin' all the rules.
Luckily, the movie is better than the title. Mostly, that's because its inventive cast seems to be having such a swell time hanging out. "Breakin' has tons of quippy dialogue, not all of it sterling. But it comes at us so quickly, and from such likable actors in such pretty rooms, in such spiffy shirts (and with Heather Headley doing such a blister- ing version of her "He Is" in the background of one scene), we can't help but like it. The ease with which Jamie Foxx and Morris Chestnut chitchat about skin color and dating rules convinces us of their affection for each other.
So does the speediness of the banter between Foxx and Gabrielle Union, as a woman Foxx accidentally falls for when he's supposed to be helping Chestnut give her the heave-ho. "Breakin' has one of those synthetic, only-in-the-movies plots involving mistaken identities and missed connections and, at first, that's annoying. But the tone is so relentlessly, farcically unreal that you surrender to the silliness, just like you do in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." That's what "Breakin' is sayin': Romance is so random, it might as well happen because of pixie dust or arrows dipped in secret potions. Who knows why. we fall in love? And who cares? Just as long as we do.
Chris Hewitt, Knight Ridder Writer act (both on and offstage) has considerably more Lucy and Ethel than it does TheLma and Louisa After they witness a mob hit, and flee the Windy City and hide out in a West Hollywood closet. They emerge disguised as drag queens, garishly bewigged and bewitching. As women pretending to be men pretending to be women they achieve the dream that eluded them as straight performers. "Connie and Carla" is an amiable tribute to classic gender-bending farces such as "Some Like it Hot" and "VictorVictoria." Like co-star Nia Vardalos' "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," the surprise hit of 2002, the chief appeal of this affectionate story is its embrace of those who are not thinner, richer and more glamorous than the moviegoers. Vardalos may be an accomplished sketch comedian, but she is not particularly interested in subtext, much to the film's detriment.
"Tootsie" and "Victor Victoria" delicately suggested that in constructing a different sexual identity an insecure performer might summon the confidence he or she otherwise lacked. Except for Toni Collette's nuanced work, Connie and Carla is a broad-stroke fairy tale about ugly ducklings who find their inner swans when they don feathers and sequins. Here are women who train a straight eye on the queer guy. What they see is that while some gay men might be insecure, they are still men and thus have more social power than women. In "Tootsie," the Dustin Hoffman character discovers that he "was a better man as a woman with a woman than he ever was as a man with a woman." Here, Connie's and Carta's epiphany is that they have better self-esteem as women pretending to be male drag queens than they ever had as women.
Had "Connie and Carla" actually developed this dramatically rather than having a character merely observe it, the film might have been a classic instead of a clone Carrie Rickey, Knight Ridder Writer 'Troy' Diane Kruger. As Achilles the greatest warrior, like, ever Pitt leads a tremendous supporting cast (many of whom also have the chiseled look of Greek gods) through a giant, CliffsNotes version of "The Iliad." To recap even more concisely: Paris, the puppy-dog-eyed prince of Troy (Orlando Bloom), has fallen for Helen, queen of Sparta and wife of King Menelaus (the always excellent Brendan Gleeson), who's twice her age. After feasting with Menelaus one night, Paris runs home with Helen to the walled city of Troy the next morning. This prompts Menelaus to run to his brother, King Agamemnon (a fabulously ferocious Brian Cox), who amasses his tribes in an all-out war on Troy not just to retrieve Helen or restore Menelaus' honor, but because Agamemnon is power-hungry, and this is a good excuse to seize the elusive Troy, where King Priam (Peter O'Toole) rules, and take over the entire Aegean. The film from director Wolfgang Petersen Perfect is enormous and awe-inspiring; visually, it's everything you'd want from this kind of epic.
And what's -remarkable is that, unlike other CGI-laden monstrosities in which the elaborate battles and landscapes are obviously fake, this looks seamlessly realistic. You truly feel as if you're watching tens of thousands of Spartan and Trojan soldiers charging toward each other, heaving and hurling themselves furiously until they col lapse in a bloody heap. Even the more intimate moments the few that exist have a visual authenticity. An early banquet scene in which King Menelaus hosts Paris and Prince Hector of Troy (Eric Bana), King Priam's elder son, as a show of peace, has a faded grandeur about it; the light- ing and colors recall the sort of huge historical pictures that came out 40 or 50 years ago. "Troy" is too long, though, and it lacks narrative momentum.
It lurches from one battle to the next with some unconvincing romance in between that feels tacked on, particularly between Achilles and Briseis (Rose Byrne), Hector's and Paris' cousin who's taken prisoner during an attack on the Temple of Apollo. The script veers from hokey dialogue, which may be an allusion to the sword-and-sandal movies that came before "Troy," to jarringly anachronistic colloquialisms, such as Helen's plea to Paris, "Don't play with me" O'Toole, once the dashing young "Lawrence of Arabia" star, now has a mature grace and nobility. He brings out the best in Pitt, who plays Achilles as the big man on campus who's a relative mystery beneath his muscular shell, and it's the kind of scene moviegoers probably won't expect from a banging, clanging summer spectacle.
